TikTok Video Quality Explained: HD vs SD (What to Choose)
May 20265 min read
Video quality is more than just resolution. Two ‘1080p’ videos can look very different depending on bitrate and compression.
Resolution vs bitrate
- Resolution (720p/1080p): image dimensions.
- Bitrate: how much data is used per second — often the biggest factor in sharpness.
- Compression artifacts: blocky edges, banding, and smearing in motion.
When to use HD
Choose the highest available quality if you plan to re-edit the clip, crop it, or reuse it in a larger video.
When SD is fine
If you only need quick offline viewing on a phone, SD often downloads faster and uses less storage.
